There’s No Way To Sugar Coat This

If you want to lose wight what’s one thing you generally do? Probably cut out sugar. Well, it might interest you to know there is another reason to step away from sugar.

Wrinkles. — Listen up….this is not a sweet story. While sugar itself is not necessarily the enemy, the way the cells in your body recognize and use sugar speeds up the body’s aging process which also leaves your skin looking older. I’ll try and explain the science in a way that’s much less boring than it really is. I would hate to drive you to have to pause and go… a cookie.

At blame is a natural process that’s known as glycation, in which the sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins to form harmful new molecules called advanced glycation end products (or, AGEs for short). The more sugar you eat, the more AGEs you develop. As AGEs accumulate, they damage adjacent proteins. Most vulnerable to damage? Collagen and elastin, the protein fibers that keep skin firm and elastic. Once damaged, springy and resilient collagen and elastin become dry and brittle, leading to wrinkles.

I know, the holidays are here and I’m not suggesting you totally deprive yourself. Just be mindful when digging into the pies that sugar is responsible for yet another thing.
